Saleh was appointed to the position on 8 December 2013 as part of a shakeup in the Sudanese leadership following the 2013 Sudanese protests. Saleh took part in the 1989 coup that brought Omar al-Bashir to power, and served on the Revolutionary Command Council for National Salvation, which governed Sudan following the coup.
